III. Checking and Registering Your Domain Name
Your next step is to register your domain name.
If you have a name server to post it to, you are ready to register your site on your own. (If you don't and you plan to do this yourself, go to Granite Canyon for a free public host name server.
Choose your owner/contact name carefully. Also make sure that you own your own name if you go through an outside service. Your technical administrative contact name should be someone related to your domain name server. Your domain name contact person is either you or the representative agent doing the work for you. You can register yourself at Internic . The process takes a couple of days. You can pay via credit card, check, or bill. You can choose from a variety of different end names. ".com" is the most common. This is a company mark. The other popular names are ".net" for network, ".org" for organization, and "gov" for government. You can use "us" for United States. If you are registering in a different country, they will have a different suffix. (For example, Germany is de.) Please see your registration agent for the suffixes they support. Register provides a very FAQ walk through of the process if your are interested in more information on this.
