What is art? A very good question. In general, there are two forms of art: beauty and business.
The first form of art is done simply for the pleasure of art itself. This is called an artist, by trade, not by profit. For example, professional painters, full-time musicians, and composers might just be a full-time, trade artist for the appreciation of art itself; not for business or self-profit. These tend to be known as "artists".
The second form of art, which is also an "Artist", tends to be a "Rock Star", or a promoter of ... (music, art, composition, etc.). They tend to be a paid "gun" that does art for profit only; and is artistic as well. For example, a pro-musician.
They tend to be self-motivated by only profits, not art by trade. "Money Men"; "Artists"; "performers"; the "business" of art; Time-Warners, etc..
Not much... but a lot. For example, "A" book writer is a pro-writer on call for profit. "B" book writer is a part-time poet, "Walt Whitman", with the love for poetry that makes the "Artist", like Shakespheare. He, or She, would like to possibly make a living off his or her art; if possible. But, he or she ultimately does it because, he or she, "loves it". Not because he or she is married to it by day for the basis of income.
The biggest difference is how one does or does not get paid for his or her art. Payment comes in many ways: respect, benefits, attention, money, a house, utilities, a "retirment plan", a "portfolio" for example.
Azurii Designs was created as a non-profit for Artists struggling with no pay on the nights and weekends. I break all business rules when I throw creative art in since 1998. Not traditionally "grant-worthy", but only developed as an art fact-finding board; Azurii Designs was not created to be a "profitable, private business in itself". [That is a different art called "Business Prospecting". The art of knowing a good business model when you see it in 1991. i.e. "Corporate Legal".]
Azurii Designs is an art consortium to trouble-shoot art as a living. Art as a product of art not as a "day job". It was dedicated to the many artists I have met who have no paycheck or benefits at Age 13 to 50; or even 65 for true trade Arts.
I have been doing it open and notorious since I was a child, novel to others. "Marketing Art" as a Science: A Science Fair project about the Solar System - It's Beauty. i.e. the "Art of the Solar System." - 4th Grade.
